Medical sector

Fen has a long track record of supporting our medical sector clients with instrumentation and embedded development skills as part of their product development team.

Medical products involve knowledge and experience in a number of disciplines. Fen has a number of medical sector clients who have great depth of knowledge in their specific areas of medical expertise. Fen works to compliment our clients’ competencies with the skills and experience gained in a broad range of other sectors and disciplines.

Medical products typically need electronic integration in quite challenging environments. For example Fen is well versed in producing such integrated solutions for wearable and hazardous environments. In these cases a successful outcome may only be achieved by considering mechanical, material and component-rating aspects of the design and how from a system perspective they come together to meet the required standards.

Often one of the biggest electronics challenges for medical products is capturing fragile sensory analogue input data in potentially electrically noisy environments. Fen’s instrumentation engineers have many years of experience developing these low noise front-ends to ensure data integrity. Furthermore our embedded software, FPGA and DSP engineers are well versed in the primary processing of that data in combination with other signals and sources, such as master clocks, video and data streams. High integrity timing management is key to the synchronicity of that integration.

The final piece of the puzzle is to ensure the captured data is extracted and, along with controls, are presented in a human readable form that brings meaning and tangible value to the user experience.

Fen is familiar with the all the key wired and wireless standards of telemetry and is experienced in all of the cross-platform development environments capable of providing a homogenous user experience across all the common smart phone, tablet, web and pc interfaces.

Increasingly even the most basic of medical devices needs to be designed with patient privacy and data security at its core. This is achieved through a combination of appropriate component choice, the correct mechanical design and manufacturing approach, data encryption and obfuscation, and performing a thorough due diligence analysis on the end-to-end design and use. Fen takes this approach for many of its clients designs where security is key.
